WOULD NETWORKING MAKE YOU MORE POWERFUL FOR YOUR ORGANIZATION?

WOULD NETWORKING MAKE YOU MORE POWERFUL FOR YOUR ORGANIZATION?

More than often, networking in organisation is associated with negative feelings: the idea of “using” relationship is linked with the idea of “ taking advantage of someone or of a situation to get a personal benefit”.

However, all organisations have people who are networking in a meaningful way in order to make the job done.

You might have already identified in your own organisation some colleagues who are situations’ solvers, who bring the piece of information which makes things happen, who influence stakeholders in buying in a new project… They often play a key role in change management, in business deal closing. Actually they are pivotal to their organisations and are recognised as “political savvy”, which means

  • they have both formal and informal connections
  • they have the ability to network effectively, within or outside their organization
  • they know how and when they can use their networking skills
  • they keep in mind the purpose they serve: the organization gain

Then, if you want to develop your own ability of being political savvy, start where you are and ask yourself:

  • Is there any negative impact by not doing it?
  • How can I use my networking in an authentic way, which will move the organisation forward

And eventually you will consider that networking in organisation may also be combined with positive power and influence.
